If offsetting is a limitation

Work. For most people, a source of income. However, for people on benefits, this often does not apply, research with 497 respondents with experience with income offsetting showed. Of the working respondents, 61% were found to be in financial trouble because of the way their income is offset against benefits. For 92% of respondents, this income offset leads to uncertainty about their income.

Serious game

1 hour in assistance

Not being able to pay fixed expenses or having to borrow money from family for groceries. This causes stress, fear and uncertainty. In addition to the research report, we created the serious game “One hour on welfare” and posted stories of experience on www.loontwerken.nu.

"This game really lets you experience what it's like to have to deal with these kinds of choices."
Nominated

Dutch Design Awards

This project was nominated for a Dutch Design Award in the Design Research category. We worked together with the Ministry of Social Affairs and Employment, UWV and several municipalities. With the conclusions and recommendations from the report, we call on legislators and implementation to put income security back at the center. Parliamentary questions were the effect. In the short term, UWV and municipalities can already start working with our practical insights and designed materials. And more thorough system change will follow.
