DDW'23

Meet the beacons

From Oct. 21 to 29 is Dutch Design Week (DDW) in Eindhoven! This year, DDW invites three designers to serve as beacons.
Muzus is proud that – besides designers Stefan Diez, Yinka Ilori – our founders Sanne and Neele Kistemaker have been asked to serve as beacons.

But how do Sanne and Neele see their role as a beacon during the DDW? What will they bring and achieve there?

The power of social design

Working together for a better future for all

That we as beacon have been chosen is not only a fantastic recognition of our work but more importantly of the social design sector. We see this role as an opportunity to emphasize that imagination and collaboration is the strength of the social design field. But also between social designers themselves. Collaborate on topics, collaborate with different disciplines, collaborate with all kinds of experts. But above all working together to create the most beautiful possible society for the future. One where we all in want life.

Creativity and innovation

The power of imagination

Imagination stimulates innovation and creativity. It allows designers to think outside traditional boundaries and come up with new, unique solutions to social problems . This goal often transcends organizational and departmental boundaries. Here, it is incredibly important to have a common goal envisioning to which everyone wants to commit. By imagining how things could be different, designers can develop innovative approaches to societal challenges.

Handholds and tools for change

Social Design in development

The field of social design is tremendously emerging and evolving. Our society has many complex challenges, which call for manufacturing power. But the challenges we face cannot not be solved by designers alone. We cannot design all problems out of existence overnight. Designers must sámen work with community people and stakeholders to find solutions to these problems. Ontwerpers zijn daarbij wel cruciaal , because they have the right skills and tools. Our mission is to give people in all sorts of places in those complex systems tools and handles to change.

''Our society has many complex challenges that require manufacturing power''

We are always working with different people, organizations and fields. It is essential that everyone feels responsible. Here the process is as important as the end result. By following clear steps and trusting the process, we can deal with uncertainties and the unknown together. Than it becomes fun and engaging. It unites us in a common mission and creates broad support for the change we are working on.

Seeing other perspectives

Theme DDW | Picture This

The theme of the DDW is Picture This. For us, Picture This is about the power of imagination, which we talked about earlier. People have a hard time imagining the future and determining what they really care about now. Designers, on the other hand, are very good at dealing with the unknown. Making the desired future imaginable. Making the unknown tangible.

”To truly effect change and take steps toward a better world, we must work together beyond our own borders.”

Picture This for us is also about showing other perspectives. Picturing a life that is not your life. Imagine what it’s like to be on welfare. Imagine what it’s like to be low-literate. Imagine being denied opportunities because of your cultural background. To truly effect change and take steps toward a better world, we need to work together beyond our own borders. Across departments and organizations. Public and private. Creative and non-creative. To start working and doing things differently.

Be drawn into new perspectives

DDW | design power for positive change

During Dutch Design Week, we celebrate the design power of the sector. The positive change we can initiate with it. We love to see collaboration between designers. All with a common goal. We hope to see designs that go beyond empathy, urgency or awareness of wrongs.

''During Dutch Design Week we celebrate the design strength of the sector''

Every year the DDW is for us a confirmation of how important designers are for the changes that are needed. And how beautiful the future can be. Let yourself be carried away by the new perspectives offered to you and open yourself to change. Take a look into the future and get moving for a better world for future generations. Will we see you during the DDW?
